Vapid Fire: Derek Bishop

Get to know Derek Bishop, a singer-songwriter who makes piano pop cool again.

By Brandon Voss

1. What turns you on, creatively or otherwise?

Derek Bishop: Good hair, people who dress a little off-kilter and do things that are oddly unique and different… and men who are excellent at singing harmony.

2. What’s a good tip for someone who wants to be you for Halloween?

Just dress like you’re a character from a futuristic version of Oliver Twist. And make sure you wear a hat!

3. Which celebrity’s hair do you covet most?

Gabe Kaplan.

4. What would your death-row last meal be?

Stale Peeps and freshly made iced tea.

5. What’s your juiciest vice or guiltiest pleasure?

Vintage electric pianos and Stevie Nicks concert tickets.

6. What extravagant purchase should probably make you feel guiltier?

That sixth pair of leather pants I just got.

7. When’s the last time you wanted to slap someone?

I want to slap myself daily for essentially saying, “Sure, I’m happy to work for free.”

8. What most likely made that stain on your outfit?

Iced tea or red wine. I shouldn’t be allowed to drink dark beverages and wear nice things.

9. Describe your favorite undergarment.

Something black so that the iced tea and red wine stains don’t show up.

10. What’s a lie you’ve told more than once?

“Sure, I’m happy to do this for you for free. Not a problem.”

BONUS: Where do you see yourself in five minutes?

I should say playing piano… but it’s probably gonna be watching old Guiding Light episodes on YouTube.
